Business Support Fund for the African Woman (BUSFAW) of The Stage Africa Foundation
Business Support Fund for the African Woman (BUSFAW) is part of the overall goal to stimulate the participation of women in the economic activities of the continent, one of the programs that should constitute the priority of Governments in Africa.
BUSFAW is a 3-6 months entrepreneurship skill training and support program that provides unemployed women and out of school girls interested in starting and growing a business of their own with information on small business management as well as skill acquisition training in either fashion Design/sewing, Bead making, Hat making, Agriculture, Hair Fascinators, Beaded Bags, Art/Craft, Cosmetology, Digital literacy, Event management, Hospitality management, Confectioneries, Makeup and Interior decoration.
The skill acquisition training is followed by another 3-6months internship with local businesses to sharpen their skills more and deeper before a small business grant is given to them to start their own. Besides that too, the fund support and encourage women interested in entrepreneurship, while providing a platform to network them with other women who are already successful in business. They also have the chance to learn from the strategies of established business players and connect with potential partners, clients, investors and mentors through the yearly AFRICAN WOMEN ACHIVERS SUMMIT & AWARDS (AWAS), a business and leadership for women professionals and experts in Africa.
Details of the Intervention/Training Program
A market survey of SMEs in these four cities (Lagos, Abuja, Portharcourt and Aba), conducted by The Stage Africa Foundation, revealed that approximately 54 percent of all market and small businesses interviewed were owned or managed by women. However, owners of small businesses – and especially female entrepreneurs – may lack management skills and information about how to access financial services and other resources, limiting their ability to improve and grow their businesses. This is why the BUSFAW training program goes beyond the practical skill acquisition to provide these women (through an additional 4weeks Business Master/Mentorship Class) and other female entrepreneurs (through African Women Achievers Summit) with tools and resources to better manage their and grow their businesses. Classroom training sessions are organized on topic such as Financial Management, Sales/Marketing, Customer Relations and Human Resources.
Each topic will be covered in 4 weeks training session. Participants will also be placed in a sector working groups (e.g. manufacturing), retail services), which will meet for additional, targeted training lessons and field activities. In the second year of the program, refresher training sessions will be held to provide more clarity on the topics and address any specific issues faced by the participating women businesses. Finally, BUSFAW participants will receive individual visits from a BUSFAW counselor to discuss any business specific challenges they face. This is to ensure the sustainability of the program’s intervention and impact.
Women entrepreneurs who signed up for BAUFAW’s In Depth Business Mentorship will be matched with coaches. These coaches will work with the women for 9 weeks in the first year of the program to develop a five year business growth plan. In the second year, the women will be matched one-on-one with mentors, who they will work with over three months to implement the business plan and adopt the lessons from the various training activities.
Since a demand driven approach is crucial for the success of the program, an in-depth but accelerated assessment has been finalized successfully within the first 4 weeks of 2018. Based on profiles of the women who will be involved, the development of a client-driven training program will be developed by both our local and international experts experienced in technical and business skills development with constant focus on the specific needs for women in business.
